Folkboat Week is the biggest gathering of Folkboats of all kinds each year. Held at the end of August in Yarmouth, hosted by the Royal Solent Yacht Club. With a variety of different types of races; round the cans, long distance and windward/leeward races and social gathering each evening there is something for everyone.
The popular event, which is supported by sponsors Lymington Yacht Haven, is as much about the week-long shoreside socialising as the racing and attracts competitors from all over the south of England and as far west as Somerset and Devon.
The Conditions
This Year's Folkboat week had blustery conditions throughout the week. The period began with mild temperatures and mostly cloudy skies, with light winds coming from the west. As the week progressed, there were occasional rain showers, particularly on the Monday and Tuesday, when the weather was more unsettled. Winds during this time were moderate, generally ranging between 10-15 mph, with gusts reaching up to 25 mph on the more blustery days. By the end of the week, the weather stabilised, bringing clearer skies and calmer winds.
The Racing
The Nordic class saw very competitive racing with Harry Hall & crew winning with boat Svane, closely followed by Jeremy Austin's Tak & Cy Grisley & Simon Evans Gybe n'. The Classic division also saw very competitive racing, with Colin Eales aboard Mistress winning overall closely followed by Dirk Kalis aboard Kingdom Come with both boats finishing on 12 points after 9 races.
We look forward to next year for the 60th Folkboat Week Saturday 16th - Friday 22nd August 2025
