We do our best to ensure the bike racks around the Yacht Haven are only used by bikes in active use. These facilities are intended for berth holders and visitors who cycle to/from the Yacht Haven, and not for long term storage.
We try to register as many bikes as possible, however we often find many bikes in a poor state of repair and clearly not in active use. Despite many campaigns to locate owners with their bikes, we remove the abandoned bikes from bike racks to keep the space available for other users.
So, what do you do with old and abandoned bikes?
Enter the New Forest Bike Project!
The New Forest Bike Project take unwanted bikes and repairs, restores and relocates the bikes to communities where they are needed. Based in New Milton (just a few miles from us in Lymington), the team donate the bikes to schools, local authorities and community groups in the New Forest, Hampshire and Dorset.
Setup in 2016 as a social enterprise, Project founder Louis has worked for over 25 charities and his biking passion has led to the Project to get more young people on two wheels.
Look out for their free #BikeBikeRevival with Doctor Bike where you can bring your bike for a free service and learn some basic fixes yourself.
"Thanks Rob & Pete at Lymington Yacht Haven for the donation of some abandoned bikes today, handy for some good parts!"
