The picturesque town of Lymington and its surrounding villages owe much of their history and development over the past millennium to the river that courses through them. This enduring waterway has been the cradle for some of the world's foremost maritime innovators and designers. In September 2024, St Barbe Museum + Art Gallery will honour this legacy with the launch of Lymington Afloat, a four-month festival designed to showcase the river’s significant impact on the region.
At the heart of Lymington Afloat is a major exhibition that will delve into the river's role in the social and commercial fabric of Lymington. The exhibition will highlight the pioneering work of local marine designers and constructors, tracing the river's history from its earliest days and offering a forward-looking perspective on environmental issues and social history. This exploration aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of how the river has shaped the community and its industries, reflecting on both past achievements and future possibilities
The highlight will be the Festival Weekend, taking place on Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 September. Over these two days, a Town Trail will come alive with a vibrant array of special offers from local outlets, numerous demonstrations, exhibitions and interactive events. Visitors will have unique opportunities to get afloat at no cost, trying their hand in yachts, dinghies, power boats, rowing boats, kayaks, and paddleboards. Additionally, there will be chances to visit Historic WWII vessels, an award-winning electric boat and engage on board with representatives from the Royal Navy, Coastguards, and the RNLI.
Education and development in the marine industry
Lymington Afloat also places a strong emphasis on education and career development within the marine sector. On 21 October the festival will host an event specifically for teachers and career advisors, highlighting the career opportunities available. A subsequent event on 7 November will focus on parents and their children, aiming to inspire the next generation to consider careers within the marine industry. Furthermore, the festival will be integrated into St Barbe’s ongoing educational programs for schools and children during holidays, ensuring that the festival’s reach extends beyond the immediate events.
Showcasing Lymington River
By drawing the local community, particularly our young people, into the rich maritime heritage of the New Forest Coast, Lymington Afloat aspires to showcase the benefits and opportunities presented by the river and the broader marine sector. This festival is not just a celebration of the past but a beacon towards a vibrant future for the community.
