Every sailor needs a hearty meal before or after setting sail. With this in mind, a new café has opened its doors at Yacht Haven Quay in Plymouth. The Mess Room is being run by the highly respected owners of the Lazy Cow in South Hams’ jewel of a town, Modbury.
Commenting on the launch, founder and owner of the Lazy Cow, Emily Bohnet says: “We’re thrilled to be taking on The Mess Room at Yacht Haven Quay. It’s such a prime position and has been designed creatively, with a log burning stove in the middle of the room". Emily continues: “We will be taking a very similar approach to the menu at The Mess Room as the one at the Lazy Cow. Wherever possible we buy the finest local produce and cook as much as possible on site. We work with producers, such as Luscombe Drinks and Rocktails, who share a similar philosophy to us". Lazy Cow is a member of Food & Drink Devon, which represents the very best of the county’s food and drink retailers, hospitality businesses and producers.

Always innovative, the family business, run by Emily and her daughter Lucie, has also just launched the Lazy Cow Cake Company for those not lucky enough to live in the immediate vicinity of the Lazy Cow. Beautifully packaged, gorgeous hand-baked cakes, happy slices, fudge and brownies are now available to order to be delivered straight to the door, anywhere in the country. The packaging is carefully designed to fit through a standard letterbox. These make perfect gifts for any occasion. In addition, customers can simply pay for a 3, 6 or 12 months’ subscription to the ‘The Cake Club’ where you can have a cake delivered once a month for a gift that keeps on giving.
In addition, the Lazy Cow has opened up one side of its premises to become an artisan bakery. Salcombe’s original and much loved Bake House is now making daily deliveries to Modbury, and the bread is flying out the door.
Lazy Cow in Modbury has built up a reputation, since it opened five years ago, of being the stylish go to place to relax and enjoy good coffee and affordable, delicious food. It is always buzzing, with both locals and those from further afield coming in first thing for a Lazy Cow big breakfast. The popular lunch menu ranges from freshly made soup, paninis and sandwiches, to chickpea, beetroot & feta salad and various specials of the day. It then gets busy again later in the day when school’s out and mothers bring their children for a milkshake and toasted teacake.
