In a recent interview, Tjeerd Brouwers, Haven Master and Technical Service Provider at Jachthaven Biesbosch in Drimmelen, shares his experiences and passion for working on the water.
Tjeerd, who has been on the water from a young age, discovered that he could turn his passion into his career. At the age of 34, together with his colleagues, he is now responsible for managing one of the largest inland marinas in the Netherlands, with as many as 1,400 berths.
In early-2025, Tjeerd sat down with HISWA, the leading marine organisation in the Netherlands, to talk about his experiences.

The role of a Haven Master
His days are filled with a mix of tasks, ranging from selling berths to carrying out practical maintenance. "The biggest misconception is that the job of a Haven Master is old-fashioned. We are a young, energetic team and there is always something to do", Tjeerd says enthusiastically.

What matters most
What Tjeerd appreciates most about his job is the combination of practical engineering and harbour related work. He has always loved tinkering with boats and engines, and now he can do it regularly as part of his job. "From complex repairs to simple maintenance, a variety that keeps it interesting", he says.

Tjeerd's Advice
For those who want to work in this industry, Tjeerd emphasises the importance of social skills and technical understanding. "And of course you have to love water, practicality and variety. Every day is different, and that is what makes this work so great!" he concludes.
With his passion and dedication, Tjeerd Brouwers is an inspiring example for anyone considering a career in water sports.
