Learn to sail
The best way to learn how to sail or how to drive a motorboat, is to take an RYA-approved course. RYA Powerboat Level 2 courses and RYA Competent Crew courses teach how the basics of boating and help build your confidence on the water.
Various companies in Plymouth provide these courses which can be tailored to you, your boat or your group.
RIB Charter & Plymouth Boat Club
Casual RIB Charter is available from our sister-site, Yacht Haven Quay. After an induction onboard, you're free to cruise off and explore the Devon and Cornwall coastline on a stylish, professionally maintained 6-person RIB.
Alternatively, the Plymouth Boat Club offers you use of a Beneteau Barracuda motorboat with guaranteed boating days every month. For an annual membership, you can book the boat whenever you want to get on the water.
Regattas & sailing events
Plymouth is a yachting town with races and regattas throughout the year, organised locally by one of the many yacht clubs, or at an international level.
The Yacht Haven plays host to a wide range events throughout the year, from cruising rallies, to the Plymouth Regatta.

Cattewater Cruising Club
The Cattewater Cruising Club is a small friendly cruising club that overlooks Plymouth Yacht Haven from their HQ at the Boringdon Arms in Turnchapel village. It was formed in 1989 and is an RYA affiliated club, providing organised rallies for motor and sailing boats in the 25ft-40ft range.
Plym Yacht Club
Based further up the Cattewater, Plym Yacht Club hosts regular racing series as well as year-round social events from their Oreston clubhouse
Royal Western Yacht Club
Founded in 1827, the RWYC is one of the oldest clubs in the world. They organise a wide range of club and fleet racing, as well as international races such as the OSTAR/TWOSTAR.
Hooe Point SC
Based in Turnchapel, HPSC offer dinghy fleet racing for Civil Servants and friends of Civil Servants, as well as motor boat cruising.
Plymouth Youth Sailing
Based in Mount Batten, Plymouth Youth Sailing gives opportunities to disadvantaged people in Plymouth. They aim to give participants the skills and ability to help break the cycle of deprivation and see beyond their disadvantage through dinghy sailing and watersports.

There are over 20 yacht clubs in Plymouth, each offering a wide variety of sailing, cruising, racing and social programmes throughout the year. The Port of Plymouth Sailing Association helps unite these clubs to work together for the benefit of the city, including the organising of the city's main regattas; Plymouth Yacht Regatta and Plymouth Dinghy Regatta
